The Southeastern Spine Institute

The MILD procedure, which stands for Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression, is a new approach to reduce pain and improve mobility for people with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). If you suffer from LSS, this procedure can help you return to a normal level of activity with less pain.

The MILD procedure has been performed on thousands of people. While this innovative new technology only can be used by specially trained physicians, the back surgeons at the Southeastern Spine Institute (SSI) have that training and can perform the MILD procedure.

LONG-LASTING, EFFECTIVE TREATMENT

Unlike some treatments that only may mask your symptoms temporarily, the MILD procedure safely and effectively addresses the underlying cause of LSS. That means that this technique can eliminate the physical effects of LSS.

Compared to more invasive surgical procedures that require general anesthesia, the doctors at SSI can perform the MILD procedure in our outpatient facility while you are under local anesthesia or light sedation. The procedure takes less time compared to more invasive procedures, so risk factors are lower too.

After the procedure, you may need less rehabilitation or physical therapy. Also, you’ll experience fewer complications, and your recovery time will likely be reduced.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE MILD PROCEDURE

After making a tiny incision in your back, your trained doctor will use a fluoroscope and specialized surgical instruments to find and remove small bone fragments and excess ligament tissue from your spinal canal. This procedure decreases the compression on your nerves, reducing pain and restoring mobility. Some doctors have described the procedure as “removing a kink in a drinking straw.”

Here are several advantages of the MILD procedure:

  • A minimally invasive procedure through a tiny incision that requires no stitches
  • Local anesthetic and light sedation only — not general anesthesia
  • Quick procedure, usually performed in one hour
  • Same-day surgery — you usually return home the same day
  • Fast recovery: often return to work and resume light daily tasks within a few days
  • No implants left behind
RECOVERY FROM THE MILD PROCEDURE

You most likely will be able to return home the same day as the procedure. Rehabilitation following the MILD procedure is usually faster and easier than that of other surgical procedures. You usually can resume light tasks and everyday activities in a few days, as your incision heals and your body recovers from the procedure.
