MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a radiological exam that allows your physician to view your organs, blood vessels, muscles, joints, and other areas without the use of x-ray. An MRI is very safe and has no harmful side effects as there is no exposure to radiation.

How does an MRI machine work?

An MRI machine creates a magnetic field which sends radio waves through your body. The response is then measured with a computer. This creates an image of the inside of your body.

Why an MRI?

The quality of an MRI scan provides the best possible information of your spine. It is considered the imaging study of choice for diagnosing nerve root compression.

What is an MRI with contrast?

If you have had previous lumbar spine surgery your MRI will be ordered with gadolinium contrast. This helps enhance the study. MRI scans are occasionally ordered on patients who have not had surgery; your physician will determine if it is necessary for you to have contrast with your MRI. Please notify our office if you are allergic to contrast dye.

Is there any preparation for an MRI?

In most cases you can stick to your normal daily routine. Please take your medications as normal unless you have been instructed otherwise. Please notify our office if you have any of the following:

  • Pacemaker
  • Aneurysm Clips
  • Cardiac Stent
  • Cochlear Implants
  • Neurostimulator Implanted
  • Metal Implants
  • Steel Surgical staples or clips
  • Implanted drug infusion device
  • Any other metal, or partially metal implant
  • If you have ever been a sheet metal worker or metal grinder

Please also inform our office if you are claustrophobic. We can prescribe you an oral sedation cocktail to help you relax during your MRI scan. You MUST bring someone to drive you home from your appointment should you be given the oral sedation. Please notify our office if you feel you will need sedation. We will need 24 hours notice for this medication. We DO NOT keep sedation medication on site at the MRI clinic. You must get a written prescription from our office (it cannot be called in) and have it filled at your pharmacy.
